Apple CEO will detail his corporate tax policy ideas to Congress next week

May 17th, 2013 No Comments »

Apple’s CEO is headed to Washington next week to talk taxes. He’s not just going to be defending Apple’s practice of keeping billions of profits offshore, Tim Cook is going to be armed with some suggestions for future policies too. And no, he doesn’t think Apple should get a free pass on bringing its money back home.

Cook told the Washington Post that he has ideas for how to help convince companies like his own to bring back their overseas earnings to the U.S.:

“If you look at it today, to repatriate cash to the U.S., you need to pay 35 percent of that cash. And that is a very high number,” Cook said in an interview Thursday. “We are not proposing that it be zero. I know many of our peers believe that. But I don’t view that. But I think it has to be reasonable.”

Apple is set to pay $7 billion in taxes in the U.S. this year, he told the paper. He also said he believes that Apple is “likely the largest corporate taxpayer in the U.S.”

But the company has — along with a lot of its peers — found creative ways to make sure that number is not any higher. Apple has $145 billion in its coffers, and $100 billion of that is from profits derived from sales overseas. But the company has not brought that money back to the U.S. because of the current corporate tax rate. Even when the company decided to issue a larger dividend for shareholders, Apple elected to borrow money rather than use profits from overseas to fund that, partly because of the tax burden.

This will be Cook’s first testimony before Congress, but not his first trip to Washington in an official capacity. A year ago he visited with House Speaker John Boehner, signaling his interest in engagement with Washington and public policy would be somewhat of a departure from his predecessor’s.

Cook also told the Post Apple believes “in good corporate citizenship.” And he has made some good U.S. corporate citizen moves since becoming CEO. In addition to instituting a charitable-giving matching program for employees, he’s also laid out plans to bring production back to the U.S. of one model of Mac. Cook told Politico that it would be an existing product that will be made here. Not only will it be put together in the U.S., he said some of the parts would be manufactured in Arizona, Texas, Illinois, Florida and Kentucky.

Apple’s Free App of the Week: Jamn, the Musician’s Multi-Tool

May 3rd, 2013 10 Comments »

This week’s free App of the Week from Apple is Jamn (pronounced “jammin”), described as a musician’s multi-tool. The app allows users to learn and understand music as it plays and displays notes for those learning new instruments. The universal app shows fingering placement for a guitar, keyboard and ukulele on their patented Jamn Wheel.

WHAT’S SO SPECIAL ABOUT THE JAMN WHEEL?
The unique, patented Jamn Wheel lays out music in a circle instead of a line. All popular music is circular, with a song typically moving from harmony to conflict to climax, resolution then back to harmony again.

When seen as a wheel, the harmony and dissonance in scales and chords can be easily visualized. The Jamn Wheel also shows the tonic, major scale, relative minor scale and major, minor and diminished triads in an intuitive and logical way. Understanding these relationships is the basis of musical theory.

April 25th, 2013 10 Comments »

Apple last month noted on its Supplier Responsibility page its January and February Supplier Work-Hour Compliance for had reached 99% in its efforts to ensure tracked employees are working no more than the required hours per week.

This morning Apple has updated its page to indicate the company now tracks an average of more than 1 million employees per week, as of March 2013. Apple notes the average hours worked per week has been under 50 and the average compliance from suppliers has been at 92% since the program was expanded in 2012, in an effort to end the common industry practice of excessive overtime.

Screen Shot 2013 04 18 at 1 02 58 PM

This week’s free App of the Week pick from iTunes is the puzzle game Take It Easy. Regularly priced at $0.99, this game was released last February, a digital version of the classic board game.

It’s a puzzle, it’s a brain teaser and it’s a game! It’s all three and much more! It is bingo with strategy! Place your pieces one at a time on the board. To score points, try to form continuous rows of the same color from edge to edge. But one wrong tile and the whole row is worthless. It gets harder as the number of empty spaces on your board, and your possible choices, diminish. Because once a tile is placed, it can’t be moved!

There are three game modes and you can play locally or online multiplayer against people from around the world via Game Center. The game includes full Retina support and recently received an update to support the iPhone 5 and fifth generation iPod touch.
