Why you should do your own mobile app store research before buying a phone

May 24th, 2013 No Comments »

Have you heard the latest app store numbers? Apple and Google now offer 800,000 or more apps each. Google’s store has crossed the 42 billion app download mark, while iTunes surpassed 50 billion. Big numbers, indeed. That means Microsoft and BlackBerry, both with far fewer apps, simply can’t offer the same experience. Or does it?

Google Play Android PhoneLast night I was reading a mobile app store report published by research firm Canalys on Thursday that suggests the “app gap” is still huge.

And when talking about overall available apps, it is. Microsoft has around 145,000 apps for its Windows Phone platform and BlackBerry offers 120,000. But when Canalys took a deeper dive, something didn’t sound right to me.

From the report:

“Of the top 50 free and top 50 paid apps featured in the Apple App Store and Google Play in the United States, based on their aggregated rankings over the first 20 days of May 2013, just 34% feature in either the Windows Phone store or BlackBerry World (as of 21 May 2013). The Windows Phone store contained 16 of the top 50 free Apple App Store applications, and 14 of the top 50 paid. It contained 22 of the top 50 free Google Play store’s applications, and 13 of the top 50 paid. In comparison, BlackBerry World contained BB10 versions of five of the top 50 free Apple App Store applications, and nine of the top 50 paid. It contained 11 of the top 50 free Google Play store applications, and 11 of the top 50 paid.

Dire numbers, no? Yet, we keep hearing from both Microsoft and BlackBerry that they now offer a majority of the top apps found in other app stores. Something doesn’t add up here.

I didn’t do extensive research but I figured I’d have a quick look for myself as to what top apps are missing from the Windows Phone and BlackBerry stores. I fired up the Google Play store to see the top paid apps and then looked for them online in these two stores. Note that I haven’t yet checked the iTunes App Store, mainly because I’m back to using Android for my primary phone and tablet; plus I’m using a Chromebook and can’t install the App Store.

Here’s what I found in my cursory look: Of the top 20 paid apps in Google Play that weren’t utility type applications, BlackBerry was missing two and Windows Phone lacked six; two of which were also missing on BlackBerry — Need for Speed, Most Wanted and Minecraft.

Minecraft

The latter strikes me as odd since Minecraft is one of the top indie game downloads on Microsoft’s Xbox 360. The four that were missing only from Windows Phone? World of Goo, Tapatalk, TuneIn Radio Pro (TuneIn is available) and Where’s My Water. That’s not too bad.

So why the low figures from Canalys? It has to do with those utilities I mentioned, which are fairly specific to Android’s more open take on apps: You can modify system settings, install third-party keyboards, etc. Several of the top paid Android apps missing on the other two platforms are titles like: Swiftkey Keyboard, Titanium Backup Pro, Nova Launcher Prime (a home screen customizer), Beautiful Widgets Pro, Root Explorer and ROM Manager, for example. Several of these are in the top 10, in fact. And guess what: None of these are available for iOS either.

One would get a completely different comparison if device-specific utilities were ignored and Canalys does admit it:

“The lists also include a small number of apps, such as ‘Find My iPhone’, that are specific to a particular ecosystem, as well as some utility apps, such as flashlight apps, for which similar offerings with equivalent functionality are available. Taking this into account, the picture can be made a little more optimistic, but the presence of clear gaps in their inventories cannot and should not be masked.”

Let’s face it: There are many ways to measure the “app gap” between platforms. It is real because each platform has its own requirements, APIs and corresponding app store. Unless we were all running cross-platform web apps — something that is poised to happen on desktops with Chrome — there will always be apps available for some mobile platforms and not others. And one could measure the top 20, 50 or whatever number they wanted across various stores to get different results.

If you’re researching a mobile platform, the app ecosystem is undoubtedly important. But the best person to determine if a platform’s ecosystem will work for you isn’t a third-party, a research firm or me. Figure out what apps you need to use on a regular basis and check the stores for yourself. You’ll likely find that the best opinion on this is your own.

"Apple Father's Day iPad Sale">

Earlier today, Apple Online Stores went down to give way for an updated storefront now showing Apple’s Father’s Day iPad sale. It’s not really a big sale in terms of price reduction or anything,
Apple just tied Father’s Day on June 16 with its drive to promote its two flagship products right now: the iPad with Retina Display and, of course, the iPad Mini.

Apple Refreshes Online Store Layout, Promotes Father’s Day

Along with rolling out a special Father’s Day gift promotion, Apple has updated its online store with a new, cleaner look, with the design focusing more on product images.

You may recall that previously you had quick access to accessory categories, refurbished products and clearance stores. With the new design, the product accessories category can be accessed though the top navigation bar. When shopping for a Mac for example, a Mac accessories category appears and by clicking on it, you’ll see a whole list of accessories displayed on the right, while the refurbished and clearance categories are now located at the bottom of the page in the store’s site-map links.

The new design focuses on delivering more visual information rather than text, and so Apple has removed some redundancy on its main store page, as Eric Slivka of MacRumors points out. Many links had previously appeared both in the main body of the page and then lower down in the site-map section.

The new design also brings visual tweaks to each main product page, allowing larger images and less textual info.

Also, as the German Macerkopf.de highlights, Apple has added the option to pay for purchases on the Apple Online Store using PayPal. Although this feature is currently limited to Germany, it could signal the start of a broader adoption in the future.

Asymco: Apple Has Set A New Record For ‘Revenue Per Store Visitor’

May 20th, 2013 10 Comments »

According to Asymco’s Horace Dediu, Apple has set a new record for ‘revenue per store visitor’ during the first quarter of 2013. The mobile analyst noted that the Cupertino giant took in a record revenue per visitor of $57.60, continuing to perform twice as well as Tiffany & Co., the second best retailer in the US.

The report notes that Apple retail showed a 7% growth in visitors, hitting an all time new revenue record of $57.6 per visitor. The average revenue per Apple store per quarter reached $13 million, making it the highest for a non-holiday quarter. Similarly, the average number of visitors per store hit 250,000 per quarter, compared with 170,000 visitors per store per quarter three years ago.

“Here are some additional metrics:

Employment has steadied at about 110 per store. This is a remarkable increase from less than half this level in 2007.

Hiring remains closely correlated with visits with visitors per employee per quarter holding to slightly more than 2000.

Average visitors per store has steadied to 250,000 per store per quarter (average for trailing 12 months). This is a quantum increase from about 170,000 per store per quarter in the twelve months ending Q1 2010. The reason for this might be the increase in floor space of newer stores and the renovation of older stores. The new store throughput rate might be an upper bound due to fire regulations”.

The analysis also claims that Apple’s profit per visitor also held steady at about $12 per quarter.

Apple Has Forced ‘Bang with Friends’ to Pull Out of the App Store

According to CNET, Apple has pulled controversial app Bang with Friends from the App Store, after it debuted last week. Titled BWF Official when it was in the App Store, the matching service–which recently surpassed 1 million users–allowed users to connect their Facebook accounts and find friends who were “down to bang” each other.

“We’re working with Apple to figure out exactly why,” a Bang With Friends spokesperson told CNET.

Co-founder Colin Hodge confirmed with Valleywag Apple had removed their app from the App Store. Users can enter their email on the BWF website to get notified when the app will return to the App Store. At this point in time, it appears too early to conclude whether or not Apple was flexing its censorship over the app’s intended service.

Anyone have luck (or get lucky) using this app?

Apple’s app store hits 50 billion downloads

May 15th, 2013 No Comments »

Apple announced Wednesday that the App store has hit 50 billion app downloads, a singificant milestone for the company only a few months after it announced 40 billion downloads back in January.

Apple’s app store downloads and downloads from the Google Play store became roughly even last fall, as Erica Ogg wrote recently, and then in the first quarter of 2013, Google pulled ahead in sheer number of mobile app downloads worldwide. However, Apple got 74 cents for every dollar spent on apps during the that quarter, according to a report by Canalys published in April, and the 50 billion downloads now puts Apple back with a slight lead.

The company announced the number of downloads on the first day of Google’s I/O conference, as Google announced that its Google Play store has seen 48 billion app downloads since launch in late 2008. However, it’s good to remember that app downloads only tell part of the story — someone could download an app and never use it again.

Apple Announces the App Store Has Surpassed 50 Billion Downloads

May 15th, 2013 10 Comments »

Apple has just announced the App Store has surpassed 50 billion app downloads as the countdown timer has reached its goal:

50 billion downloads

Apple’s 50 billion app countdown page now reads:

50 billion app downloads. One really big thank you.

The company notes a winner will be announced shortly. Last year’s winner was announced two days later, which turned out to be Chunli Fu from China after she downloaded Where’s My Water? Free.

The company recently launched a contest to provide the 50 billionth app downloader with a $10,000 iTunes Card and also 50 extra $500 cards to the next additional downloaders. Last year, Apple held a similar contest to celebrate its 25 billionth app download.
