iPhone 5S, Low-Cost iPhone to Enter Production in June or July, Analyst Says

May 8th, 2013 10 Comments »

Apple is preparing to start mass production of multiple new iPhones, right on schedule for a September (or around) launch, Katy Huberty, Morgan Stanley’s chief Apple watcher wrote in a note to investors on Wednesday, after returning from a visit to Hong Kong and Taiwan.

According to the note obtained by AppleInsider, Katy Huberty says the new iPhone models will launch around September, information in line with an earlier report claiming Sharp will start mass production of the next-generation iPhone display next month.

The second model Huberty heard about is the rumoured low-cost iPhone, which will allegedly bring a strategy shift, the end of iPhone subsidies, even if its price will be $330 as whispered. This information seems to suggest that Apple could launch the low-cost iPhone and the high-end iPhone at the same event. This isn’t something unusual, as the company launched the iPad 4 and lower-cost iPad mini during the same event last year.

Regarding the iPhone 5, Huberty has received information that shipments are in balance with demand, which is a positive turn of events, as suppliers complained a couple months ago that had Apple reduced the orders of the iPhone 5.

“After a slow start, iPhone 5, is now on track to meet carrier volume expectations and iPhone 4 price cuts could stimulate incremental demand near-term,” Huberty wrote. “Carriers see the opportunity for Apple to expand market coverage with 5-inch and lower-priced iPhones over time. TD-LTE licenses, and related phone launches, are expected by year-end.”

Japanese Telco KDDI Memo Claims iPhone 5S Launch in July [Rumour]

April 29th, 2013 10 Comments »

iphone-5s-kddi-rumour

After Tim Cook cooled down June iPhone 5S launch rumours with a “killer” sentence a document obtained by the French site Nowhereelse.fr suggests that the iPhone 5S will be presented in June followed by a July release.

The document is reportedly intended for employees of Japanese wireless carrier KDDI and, as you can see from the above image, the iPhone 5S is clearly visible in red. What’s interesting, though, is that the document allegedly puts iPhone 5S pre-orders to June 20 with the highly anticipated handset to reach the stores in July.

If we can believe this rumour, the highly anticipated handset will feature a 13 MP rear camera, a fingerprint sensor, and will have iOS 7 pre-installed.

Considering that earlier analyst consensus was for a June release, the KDDI internal document leak seems to confirm analysts’ talk. Also WWDC 2013 is scheduled for June 10–14, so we can expect a surprise from Apple. But if we are to believe Tim Cook, the iPhone 5S won’t be available until this fall.

Lower Cost iPhone to Launch Alongside ‘iPhone 5S’ in July, Says Analyst

April 12th, 2013 10 Comments »

low-cost-iphone

After attending an industry trade show this week in China, Topeka Capital analyst Brian White concluded that Apple intends to present the low-cost iPhone alongside the iPhone 5S, with the handsets reaching consumers in July.

The sources have told White that the low-cost iPhone will feature the same 4-inch display as the iPhone 5, but there will be notable design differences like a slightly thicker design with curved back made of plastic.

What is more interesting – and creates a bit of confusion – is the same analyst who a couple of days ago said Apple will diversify its iPhone line by offering the choice between multiple screen sizes, on Friday said that there was a consensus at the trade show that the screen size will remain untouched.

The changes will likely be a larger camera and slightly rearranged buttons on the left side of the device. Just like Kuo, White also says the key selling point of the iPhone 5S will be the fingerprint scanning technology.

April 9th, 2013 10 Comments »

According to their sources, Makotakara claims the next ‘iPhone 5S’ will be announced in July and be available in August. Coupled with the rumoured lower-cost iPhone, the iPhone 5S will reportedly be available in three additional colours to go with the original black and white, which we have become all too familiar with. Loose Google Translation below:

According to reliable sources, you are more likely to speak the next iPhone will be announced in July, will be released in August from July.Has been rumored so far, iPhone and cheaper version is 5 color lineup, apparently, it seems that there is likely to be applied to three-color one color two colors also 5 iPhone iPhone 5S. However, I was not talking about the kind of detailed color sources.

Earlier today Topeka analyst Brian White issued a research note to say the next iPhone 5S could come in two different screen sizes. White similarly reported on an iPhone 5S launch to include multiple colour options back in January, along with various screen sizes. Previous reports by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo from KGI Securities also alleged the rumoured budget iPhone would come in numerous colours as well.

Do you think we will soon see different coloured iPhones?

Rumour Claims iPhone 5S Media Event Set for June 20th, Launch in July

March 29th, 2013 10 Comments »

As we round the corner into the month of April, we continue to get closer to June and July, which according to recent rumours could indicate Apple returning to a summer iPhone launch schedule.

Macotakara is reporting the May 2013 issue of Apple enthusiast magazine MacFan is claiming Apple will hold a media event on June 20th to announce the iPhone 5S, with a release set the following month in July. The magazine also claims in August a lower-cost iPhone may also become available.

Apple typically holds media events on Tuesdays or Wednesdays; the iPhone 5 media event last year was held on a Wednesday and the iPhone 4S event prior to that was held on a Tuesday. June 20th is a Thursday, which does not fall in line with Apple’s history of product announcements.

Based on openings in the Moscone Center calendar, some developers believe Apple could hold WWDC from June 10-14. Last year the company concentrated on iOS 6 and OS X Mountain Lion at the developer event (held on June 11-15; tickets sold out in two hours), released the 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro and refreshed its MacBooks. There was no iPhone hardware release at the time, as the iPhone 5 was announced later in September.

There is always one source annually in the Apple news cycle ‘first’ to claim a specific date of when Apple will launch its iPhone or hold some product announcement. This year, it looks like MacFan wins the title. Until we hear a “yep” from Jim Dalrymple over at The Loop, June 20th is just another regular day in the calendar year. Happy Good Friday, y’all.

Google Reader to Shut Down on July 1st, Due to Declining Usage [Update]

March 14th, 2013 10 Comments »

Google reader issues

Google has announced a bunch of ‘spring cleaning’ items and one of them includes their popular RSS client, Google Reader (seriously):

We launched Google Reader in 2005 in an effort to make it easy for people to discover and keep tabs on their favorite websites. While the product has a loyal following, over the years usage has declined. So, on July 1, 2013, we will retire Google Reader. Users and developers interested in RSS alternatives can export their data, including their subscriptions, with Google Takeout over the course of the next four months.

Google says “these changes are never easy” but they want to focus their efforts to concentrate on “building great products that really help in their lives.” Umm…Google Reader does help my daily life–it’s an essential part of my workflow. Are you using Google Reader?

The Google Reader blog says:

There are two simple reasons for this: usage of Google Reader has declined, and as a company we’re pouring all of our energy into fewer products. We think that kind of focus will make for a better user experience.

Update 5:56 PM: Feedly says it has been anticipating the shutdown of Google Reader, thus have been working on project Normandy, essentially a Feedly clone of the Google Reader API, running on Google App engine. So if you are a Google Reader using Feedly, once the shut down occurs your transition will be seamless. Feedly is available for iOS, Android, Chrome and Firefox.

iPhone 5S Slated for July; iPad 5, Retina iPad mini for October says Report

January 25th, 2013 10 Comments »

Earliert today iLounge editor Jeremy Horwitz revealed details regarding the iPhone 5S, iPad mini and iPad 5 according to his supply chain sources. He has posted a follow up report with more details from another trusted source.

iPhone 5S

  • main feature to be an upgraded rear camera, possibly Sony’s 13MP sensor, along with the previously mentioned flash upgrade and processor bump
  • current prototypes are named N51 and N53; target date mentioned is July
iPad 5
  • code name J72; October release give or take
2nd generation iPad mini
  • code name J85, currently planned for October
  • sources note the same basic feel as the first gen iPad mini but will feature a Retina display; deeper details are lacking
  • If Retina is coming without form factor changes, a thinner, denser screen will be required (i.e. IGZO), but supply issues are a factor for the year

The rumoured iPhone 5S upgrades are in line with what we have seen in the past. A July release would mean the next upgrade would come less than a year after the iPhone 5. For the iPad mini, but it remains to be seen whether Apple will be able to retain the same form factor given increased power requirements of a Retina display.

Back in December, Digitimes reported Apple was considering IGZO technology for future iOS displays.

In May of last year, Horwitz’s sources correctly relayed information regarding the thinner iPhone 5 and new smaller Lightning connector.

Apple lawsuit wrap-up for July 2012

August 4th, 2012 No Comments »

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-94396" title="apple-moneylogo-640w" src="http://www.technologytell.com/apple/files/2012/04/apple-moneylogo-640w.jpg" alt="Apple money logo" width="640" height="480" />

July 2012 had a wide variety of lawsuits, both new and old, most having to do with patents.

  • Even though the Department of Justice (DOJ) is defending their lawsuit against Apple and major book publishers, not everyone thinks it should continue. New York Senator Charles Schumer reprimanded the DOJ, and said “… the suit could wipe out the publishing industry as we know it.”
  • Siri has been the cause of several lawsuits, and more seem to be filed every month. This time, Taiwan’s National Cheng Kung University says it owns two U.S. patents that allows Siri to translate voice commands into texts and notes. The university is seeking damages “… based on Apple’s U.S. sales of devices that use Siri,” which means iPhone 4S and iPads when iOS 6 is released.
  • There’s a lot going in the Apple vs. Samsung trial, with drama happening both in and out of court. The Verge has the best and most comprehensive coverage, with transcripts from people testifying, motions from lawyers, and even pictures of the evidence that’s being submitted. It’s being constantly updated, which makes it a great place to get all of the news.
  • Kodak won a battle in its patent war against Apple when U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Allan Gropper ruled Apple does not own two patents Kodak wants to sell at auction this month. Apple also lost its bid to move the case from bankruptcy court to a local district court, which may have helped stop the patents Kodak owns from being sold.
  • All is not against Apple, as the International Trade Commission ruled that Kodak’s color image preview patent, No. 6,292,218, was invalid. Kodak was using this patent to try and get money from companies that were not licensing the patent.
  • HTC counter sued Apple over two patents which makes up for the five patents that were tossed out by the International Trade Commission. Later on, HTC withdrew one of the patents from the lawsuit, which brings down the total to two patents.
  • Apple suffered a defeat against Motorola because its lawsuit was thrown out and sales of the Xoom throughout the European Union can continue.
  • Apple purchased AuthenTec—an electronic fingerprint-authentication provider—for $356 million, and already there’s a lawsuit in the works. An investor claims AuthenTec accepted Apple’s bid of $8 a share, and that was too low. Right now, the law firms are investigating whether AuthenTec’s board of directors purposely undervalued the company.
  • The Portuguese Association for Consumer Protection (DECO) is going to sue Apple over supposedly misleading advertising over AppleCare, similar to what happened in Italy. Essentially, Portuguese law “presumes that a defect found within two years after a product is purchased was also present at time of delivery,” which Apple doesn’t state, making AppleCare more important than it really is.
  • Noise Free Wireless is suing Apple and claims Apple violated its noise-canceling technology patents, breached a contract, and stole trade secrets. Noise Free claims it met with Apple over using its technology in the iPhone and iPad, and they later used this knowledge to file a patent which used their technology.
  • Apple and 12 other companies settled a lawsuit from NTP Inc. over patents describing the delivery of email over wireless systems. Terms of the settlement weren’t released, but at least it’s one less thing to worry about.
  • Google may have to pay Apple $22.5 million dollars for violating the privacy of users of Apple’s Safari browser.
  • Google wrote a letter to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee saying that patents that “cover features that are so popular as to have become ubiquitous” should be treated just as technical patents. Apple disagreed and said that just because a feature becomes really popular, such as slide-to-unlock, that doesn’t make them into standards and doesn’t mean Apple has to license them to competitors.
