Leaked iPad 5 Schematics Show Reduced Thickness and Thinner Bezels

Just like it did with the iPhone 5s and 5c, AppleInsider has obtained design documents from case manufacturers that will likely use the data included in the image below to create new cases to fit the new form factor.

iPad 5 schematics

As you can see from the above image, the iPad 5 is expected to measure 169.48 millimeters in width, 15 millimeters less than the previous-generation model, and 240 millimeters in height, 1.30 millimeters less than the iPad 4.

In terms of thickness, the full-size tablet’s leaked schematics show that it will only measure 7.50 millimeters, which is 2.05 millimeters less than the iPad 4.

The new details seem to reinforce earlier rumours claiming the iPad 5 would be thinner and lighter than the iPad 4, and if these numbers are indeed correct, it will be much more portable as well.

In addition, Apple is rumoured to be producing the iPad 5 and the iPad mini 2 in three colours: Space Gray, gold and silver, according to the latest image leaks, and hopefully the tablets will sport the recently introduced Touch ID. With the fingerprint sensor built into all new-generation iDevices, the iCloud Keychain feature — present in beta versions of iOS 7 and highlighted during the WWDC 2013 keynote, but removed with GM — could make sense, as it will offer the (minimum) protection needed for such sensitive data as credit-card information and passwords.

Some say Apple is doomed, because it can’t innovate; but for some reason Apple is nearing the sale of its 700 millionth iDevice. And considering that the launch of the iPhone 5s and 5c have set a new record for first-weekend sales, I think the date must be very close. The key to Apple’s success may not be unknown (for those who think Apple’s sales numbers are worrisome), but the majority of senior executives think Apple is the most innovative company of all (via the Wall Street Journal).

The statement comes from Boston Consulting Group’s 2013 “Most Innovative Companies” report, which listed Apple has the No. 1 company for the ninth consecutive year, seconded by Samsung, while Google retained third place.

The 2013 report examines companies and innovation through the lens of what gives successful innovators their edge. For the first time, we asked respondents to rate their companies’ innovation performance relative to their peers in the marketplace. Approximately one-fifth rated their own performance as strong, another fifth assessed their performance as weak, and about 60 percent said it was neutral or average. In addition to comparing the practices of stronger and weaker innovators, we explore five factors that lead to strength in innovation: the commitment of senior management, the ability to leverage intellectual property (IP), a customer focus, strong management of the innovation portfolio, and well-defined and governed processes.

Innovation is the key spice to maintaining a competitive edge in the marketplace, but it’s also difficult to measure. Anyways, here is the list of the top 20 most innovative companies:

    1. Apple
    2. Samsung
    3. Google
    4. Microsoft
    5. Toyota
    6. IBM
    7. Amazon
    8. Ford
    9. BMW
    10. General Electric
    11. Sony
    12. Facebook
    13. General Motors
    14. Volkswagen
    15. Coca-Cola
    16. Hewlett-Packard
    17. Hyundai
    18. Honda
    19. Audi
    20. Daimler

Relentless Apple parts leaker Sonny Dickson from Australia has sent us the following images of what looks to be a gold iPad mini showing the Touch ID sensor found in the iPhone 5s. The images first appeared on Weibo (with a watermark), but the original poster sent them directly to Dickson (without the watermarks), who forward them for us to share with you. He explains the images were sent to him by a first time tipster, so take them for what they are.

    Check them out below:

    Gold ipad mini

    Touch id ipadmini

Dickson also sent out the following tweets, based on what he’s hearing:

Dickson’s sources in the past have proved to be credible, especially when it came to leaks of the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c. With Apple rumoured to launch new iPads at an October event like last year, could we expect new colours and features such as gold and Touch ID to pop up at the event?

CNET reported tonight IHS Supply believes the introduction of a Retina iPad mini this fall alongside the iPad 5 could be “less certain” due to manufacturing volumes, which apparently hint towards a Q1 2014 launch.

In previous interviews, Dickson had stated on the record he was going to quit leaking Apple parts after the iPhone 5s/5c launch. After asking him about this, he told us “I did change my mind for now well I could stop any time I want – I’m just not sure.”

Let us know what you think about these images–do they look ‘legit’ or are they just random parts from a Chinese manufacturer trolling the internet on Alibaba or possibly a Photoshop job?

Back in January Netflix announced its Netflix Open Connect delivery network and participating partners to allow high quality ‘Super HD’ streams to 1080p televisions plus devices such as the Apple TV 3.

It was initially revealed TELUS, Teksavvy in the GTA, Rogers, MTS, Bell FibreOP in Halifax and Novus had partnered with Netflix and their delivery network.

Now, Netflix has announced it’s available to everyone, regardless of your internet service provider. There are now 33 million members worldwide streaming 1 billion hours per month, making up one-third of peak bandwidth in the USA:

All Netflix members, regardless of their Internet service provider (ISP), now have access to the highest quality HD streams available on Netflix.

This means that the great TV shows and movies on Netflix will look even better on HD screens with a higher bit rate stream, Super HD, that applies less compression to the 1080p image.

    http://youtu.be/sExZim0S8nk

Netflix implements ‘adaptive streaming’ which means it will dynamically adjust quality based on available bandwidth and says those with an ISP as part of the Open Connect network will get the best experience. ‘Super HD’ will appear on titles that will support the highest quality feature, as seen in our image above on the Apple TV.

Click here to sign up for Netflix–it’s $7.99/month and the first month is free.

The iPhone 5s has become a hot commodity due to its worldwide shortage, with thieves going so far as performing armed robberies of a TELUS dealer. Now, it appears they are targeting UPS deliveries of Rogers iPhone 5s upgrades, as iPhoneinCanada.ca reader @canuckglamgirl informs us her package had its contents stolen.

Her package had the iPhone 5s inside stolen with only her Rogers contract documentation and nano SIM card intact. The bottom of her box shows it was re-sealed using white tape and signs of being tampered with. She tells us the packages were coming from Concord, so that could be where the theft occurred.

As for her missing phone? She tells us Rogers is investigating which means she’ll have to wait even longer for her iPhone 5s. The picture below was taken at a UPS Store in Kitchener.

iPhone 5s models, in particular gold models, are selling at a premium on eBay. The last time we checked, a 32GB model in gold sold for $1,400, almost $600 higher than Apple’s retail price. Let us know if your Rogers iPhone 5s delivery arrives intact or not!

We’ve previously reviewed the Clarivue Ultra-Clear for iPhone 5, but we figured we’d show you how easy the install is on the iPhone 5s/5c. These screen protectors adhere using static and are our favourites as a top pick, compared to others we’ve used and reviewed in the past.

    Screen Shot 2013 09 26 at 1 55 47 PM

All you have to do is ensure a dust-free environment, line up the protector and place it down on your iPhone 5s/5c. As you can see from the following video I quickly whipped up, installation on my iPhone 5c review unit was a snap:

The Ultra-Clear models are $14.99 for the front (two protectors inside), with a back option available for $5 more (coming soon for the iPhone 5s).

Other protectors include their Anti-Glare ($14.99), Privacy ($19.99), Mirror Screen ($15.99) and XT Glass ($19.99), to go along with some iPhone 5/5s/5c cases as well.

What are the benefits of these screen protectors? The protectors are so clear and unobtrusive sometimes you forget you even have a protector on. Clarivue also offers free standard shipping to Canada, the USA and International orders plus a lifetime replacement warranty (you pay $3 for shipping, plus have to ship back your old protectors). No more dealing with expensive US shipping options or duties. Plus, installation is a breeze (no more wet sprays) as it basically installs itself.

Also, as a bonus the company is Canadian, based in Richmond, British Columbia so you’re supporting local if that matters to you.

As for downsides? Fingerprints do appear but you can’t see them when the screen is on. Most screen protectors will attract fingerprints regardless. The cuts are fairly accurate so you do have to ensure you line the protector up accurately. If you mess up, you can just remove it and try again (but that increases the chances of dust getting on the screen) or just use the second protector.

These protectors have a minimalist look for those who use their phones naked. If you’re looking for thicker drop protection you might want to look elsewhere or buy a case. These are the ones I’m using right now and recommended to friends and family when I get asked which ones to buy. Haven’t experienced any ‘corner peeling’ since they’re so thin it doesn’t catch or latch onto things in your pocket.
