Two Powerful Siri Tips for In-Car Use

May 19th, 2013 10 Comments »

It doesn’t matter what kind of “relationship” you have with Siri (some have gone as far as making marriage proposals), Apple’s virtual assistant is always there to help you. This can be especially handy when in the car. Here are some great tips to make use of Siri’s abilities even while driving.

First things first: navigation. If you add a few extra words like “via transit,” Siri can help you choose the preferred apps for directions. It works like this: first you instruct Siri to, for example, “get me directions from San Francisco to Santa Barbara via transit.” With this command, Siri will launch the Maps application and display the routing pane. This allows you to choose the third-party app you prefer for directions.

Another tip when driving: if your car has a built-in speakerphone, you can enable Bluetooth on your iPhone and pair the devices. Now, the fun part begins: when you call Siri (hold the home button) a speaker icon will appear on the right of the Siri button. After pressing it, you’ll get access to a menu of all the available sound inputs your handset can use. By selecting one of them Siri will listen to you using that microphone, and will speak to you using the car’s speakers. In case your car doesn’t have built-in speakers, you can opt for a Bluetooth accessory that has both microphone and speakers.

Bell Loses 911 Fee Class-Action Lawsuit, Will Appeal Supreme Court Ruling

May 18th, 2013 10 Comments »

Last month Bell Mobility started its day in court in Yellowknife over a class-action lawsuit related to 911 monthly fees in the Whitehorse area. James Anderson launched the suit–which has about 30,000 people involved–back in 2007, as he argued a 75 cent monthly fee should not be charged to those without 911 service.

According to a ruling made yesterday, the Northwest Territories Supreme Court agreed with Anderson the 911 charges were not justified (via CBC):

On Friday, Justice Ron Veale ruled Bell is liable to nearly 30,000 cellphone users in the N.W.T., Yukon and Nunavut who paid for 911 services they didn’t receive.

Out of the territories only Whitehorse had a 911 operator, whereas other residents had to dial a 10 digit number for emergency services. The lawyer representing the Andersons, Keith Landy says the ruling sets a precedent:

“Cellphone has become a necessity today. And by virtue of them having monthly fees to pay, and then having to pay a charge where the service isn’t provided, is certainly something that needed to be corrected in our view.”

Jason Laszlo from Bell Media Relations, said the ruling goes beyond what he believes the trial was initially about–and the company will appeal the verdict:

“We’re pleased the court ruled in our favour on the main issues certified for trial, and found that Bell Mobility is not required to provide live 911 operators. That is the responsibility of local governments,” he said in an email.

“But we will certainly appeal its decision on a matter that hadn’t even been certified for trial – i.e. whether customers in those areas are exempt from paying the fees charged to all customers nationally.”

The class-action lawsuit affects Bell customers who signed contracts before April 13, 2010 across the North.

SeatGeek – Find Deals On Tickets [Review]

May 18th, 2013 10 Comments »

Ever buy tickets to a concert or game only to find out that one of your friends found a better deal? Well SeatGeek hopes to remove this problem by collecting the ticket listings from over 120 resellers, then showing you which tickets are the best value.

Who would you like to see?

Who would you like to see?

Find the event you wish to attend

Find the event you wish to attend

You can use SeatGeek to explore and see all the events happening near you. Or you can search by performer, event, or venue. Once you find and select an event the tickets can be sorted by their price or Deal Score, (only if the venue’s layout is available) which is a number dependent on a ticket’s price and location that (allegedly) shows you which tickets are “the most bang for your dollar.” After selecting a ticket you are shown a breakdown of the price, the exact seat location (sometimes even the view from your seat is shown), the number of tickets available, and notes from the seller. Once you press Buy Now you’ll be redirected to the ticket reseller’s checkout.

I really liked SeatGeek. I had no issues finding tickets to any performance or game that I knew were coming. I didn’t even have to go through the painful ordeal of entering in my credit card information on my iPhone, because I discovered that I could email myself a link to the ticket reseller’s checkout, then buy the tickets on my iMac.

Apple Has Forced ‘Bang with Friends’ to Pull Out of the App Store

According to CNET, Apple has pulled controversial app Bang with Friends from the App Store, after it debuted last week. Titled BWF Official when it was in the App Store, the matching service–which recently surpassed 1 million users–allowed users to connect their Facebook accounts and find friends who were “down to bang” each other.

“We’re working with Apple to figure out exactly why,” a Bang With Friends spokesperson told CNET.

Co-founder Colin Hodge confirmed with Valleywag Apple had removed their app from the App Store. Users can enter their email on the BWF website to get notified when the app will return to the App Store. At this point in time, it appears too early to conclude whether or not Apple was flexing its censorship over the app’s intended service.

Anyone have luck (or get lucky) using this app?

Apple’s 50 Billionth App Winner Says He “Saved Up Apps” To Win The Contest

May 17th, 2013 10 Comments »

Brandon Ashmore 640 20130516173537 640 480

Brandon Ashmore, 21, from Ohio, winner of Apple’s 50 Billion App Countdown contest who was awarded a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card yesterday, says he held his downloads until Wednesday night to try to give himself a better chance of winning the contest, CultOfMac is reporting.

The winner, who thought it was a joke when Apple called to tell him he had won, revealed how he “saved up apps” to download to his iPhone in an a bit to become the 50 billionth downloader. Eventually, he decided the caller was telling the truth because he had too much information about him to not be genuine.

Ashmore told NewsChannel5 that “he saved up about five apps to download on his iPhone 5 Wednesday night to try to win the contest.” Say the Same Thing, a word game by from Space Inch, became the App Store’s 50 billionth download.

But despite going out of his way to give himself the best chance of winning the $10,000 gift card, Ashmore still thought it was a prank when an Apple representative called to tell him he’d won the prize.

Currently studying computer science at Lakeland Community College, Ashmore said he hasn’t decided how he’s going to spend the credit yet.

Intel CEO Steps Down With Regrets Of Not Getting Its CPU Inside The iPhone

May 17th, 2013 10 Comments »

An interesting feature by The Atlantic regarding Paul Otellini, who officially stepped down as Intel CEO yesterday with Brian Krzahnich taking his place, reveals the former CEO’s regrets of not being able to get the Intel CPU inside the original iPhone. Otellini explained in an interview that he should have followed his gut instinct and “not relied so strictly on cold hard data”.

Otopop

Paul Otellini stayed at Intel for almost 40 years. He’s been CEO of the company for the last eight years. According to the source, Intel generated more revenue during his eight-year tenure as CEO than it did during the rest of the company’s 45-year history. However, during his interview with The Atlantic, Otellini expressed regret for not having the foresight to get Intel’s chips into the original iPhone. In fact, it was the only moment the interviewer says he heard regret slip into Otellini’s voice.

“We ended up not winning it or passing on it, depending on how you want to view it. And the world would have been a lot different if we’d done it,” Otellini told me in a two-hour conversation during his last month at Intel. “The thing you have to remember is that this was before the iPhone was introduced and no one knew what the iPhone would do… At the end of the day, there was a chip that they were interested in that they wanted to pay a certain price for and not a nickel more and that price was below our forecasted cost. I couldn’t see it. It wasn’t one of these things you can make up on volume. And in hindsight, the forecasted cost was wrong and the volume was 100x what anyone thought.”

Steve Jobs in his biography said there were two reasons why Apple didn’t ask Intel to manufacture chips for the iPad and the iPhone:

“There were two reason we didn’t go with them. One was that they are just really slow. They’re like a steamship, not very flexible. We’re used to going pretty fast. Second is that we just didn’t want to teach them everything , which they could go and sell to our competitors”.

Apple TV to Get First Network Television App from The CW

May 17th, 2013 10 Comments »

Xbox 1 736x414

According to Deadline, Apple has struck a deal to stream content from The CW to the Apple TV in the USA, as CW President Mark Pedowitz says “this year we’re reaching more viewers on more platforms.” The CW told MacRumors the deal will bring an app to the Apple TV’s home screen and function like the existing Xbox and mobile CW apps:

It’s a dedicated CW app that will work like our Xbox and mobile and tablet apps – no cable authentication required, full episodes of our shows available next day after air, ad-supported.

This is a pretty significant achievement for bringing shows to the Apple TV as consumers will be able see shows the next day, albeit with ads. There is no word whether Canadian Apple TV users can expect to see our TV networks launch a similar deal. Currently there are existing iPhone and iPad apps to stream ad supported shows from networks like the CBC, CityTV, Global and CTV, with most apps including AirPlay functionality to stream to the Apple TV.
